Abstract

Introduction Since routine MMR immunization, the incidence of mumps declined. However, major outbreaks have occurred worldwide, and the incidence is on the increase in Korea. The aim of this study was to verify the incidence and neurologic complications of mumps. Methods In a retrospective way, 61 children and adolescents with parotitis were included during March 2014 to July 2014 at pediatric department of Busan St. Mary’s hospital. We conducted a chart review of all the patients of demographics, clinical manifestations focusing on neurologic complications. Diagnosis of mumps is made by positive results for mumps immunoglobulin M (Ig M), and immunoglobulin G (Ig G). Results Among them, eight patients were diagnosed with mumps and they had previously received 2 doses of MMR vaccination. Of these, four patients had neurologic involvement. All patients showed aseptic meningitis, and one patient had orchitis, and another patient had right hearing loss. Conclusion It is known that aseptic meningitis, epididymo-orchitis, and deafness are well-known complications of mumps and complications are less common after vaccination. Despite the immunization for MMR, incidences and complications of mumps are not infrequently. The results indicate that neurologic complications associated with mumps are mostly mild, but rarely are serious. To prevent major outbreak, further studies are needed.
